mIRC, a quick startup guide. General Use, Downloading, Customization…

mIRC Edited logoSo, you have finally found IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and realize that it owns. Its a place where there is always some to talk to, all kinds of topics, and a great place to download files (especially for BitTorrent haters). You might have already found out how to join a server and maybe even how to join a channel…or not. Anyway, I’ve already found IRC and am writing this article to help people on their way to learning how to use it. I’m sure there are all kinds of guides out there for IRC, but I intend to write this one to contain just everything that you will probably use and not all the extra commands. So, lets get started!

.:The Client:.

Ok, first you are going to need a client. I guess you might already have one and all, but considering that you don’t really know how to use IRC yet, you probably don’t know if that client really is any good or not. Thus, it really shouldn’t matter if I make you download another one really quick will it? In my opinion, a great client would be mIRC. It is the most popular client used today in the channel, and has great features. But before you go rush on to Google to download the client, just know that doing this will give you a program without any great add-ons or anything. Then you get to go out everywhere, and try to find the best ones to dl and blah blah blah. Instead, lets just get mIRC with the SysReset script. Here is a link for the full package of SysReset: http://download.sysreset.com/sysreset255.exe

Basically, SysReset has file server capabilities and add-ons for helping you run your own channel, using fancy brackets, handling private messages, and Winamp functions(show playing song and more). It is also the most popular script, making it easier to get help when you don’t know how to do something.

On the Next page, we’ll start with General Use.

Making everything match (Windows Theme Modification & Websites)

(Click Pic for better view)GoogleDarkIf you have downloaded and installed a visual style for windows, you have probably went out seeking to make as much stuff match on your computer to that theme as possible. For example, if you have downloaded a dark theme, you probably want (but not necessarily ) a dark wallpaper to go with it. Or, you could get something to contrast it. Whatever the case, this little tutorial should help you take this desire to coordinate to the next level.

.:Get a matching FireFox theme:.

Before I begin, if you do not have FireFox, get it, and then make sure you follow this tutorial: Speeding Up Firefox

Now, an Internet browser is probably what you use most on your computer, so getting a good theme for it makes perfect sense. You can find themes for firefox here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:2

Note: My personal favorite that goes along with the dark theme I have installed: NASA Night Launch

Now, we can take it to the next level: making pages you commonly visit match your theme.

.:Making webpages match:.

  1. First, go ahead and download the FireFox plugin, Stylish.
  2. After you have installed the plugin, and have restarted FireFox…
go to a page that you wish to change.
  3. Right click on the Stylish icon in the bottom right-hand corner of firefox(see picture, at http://images.xnr.be/68db967f0cafe3c99e40f70813c50881.png)

  4. Click on Find Styles for This Page.
  5. Click on some of the links and if you like it, press load into stylish. If you download one, and then don’t like it, go into the Manage Styles menu of Stylish. You can either delete it entirely with the delete key, or disable it buy selecting it, pressing the edit button, and Unchecking the enabled box.
  6. Now go to that webpage, and you’ll see it has been changed.
  7. NOTE: if you install some for Gmail, they will probably only work if you use the “Old Version” of Gmail. (As soon as you sign in, at the top there is a button for this)

.:Recommendations:.

Since I’m using a dark theme, I like all the dark ones…

You will notice that many of these are more for “improving” a site, rather than making it look better. This is especially helpful when you want to remove some nasty ads on a site you frequent.

Windows cannot access the specific device… Trillian Astra

Getting this error when trying to open a file?

Windows cannot access the specific device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions.

Well, if you are using Windows XP Professional, you can just right click on the file, go to the Security tab, and check the appropriate options (You need to be logged into an account with Administrative Privileges). If you are using Home Edition or some other version, you will need to do this in the Administrator account in Safe Mode. NOTE: While in Safe Mode, you should be able to open the file.

Otherwise, if what you have downloaded was say… a cracked copy of Trillian Astra (or cracked program with a patch for that matter), then chances are the AVG is doing this to you.

So, here are your options… you can either just uninstall AVG, or…

  1. Open up AVG, and scan where the patch for Trillian (or another program) is located. When the message boxes fly up regarding the patch file, just add it to exceptions.
  2. When that is done, keep the AVG window open, and then run the patch. As the popups regarding the patch from AVG popup, simply press Add to Exceptions.
  3. Now, the program should run, and you should be happy! lol…

Hope that helped, comments are appreciated. And uh… oh yeah… Omnamo.com does not endorse the hacking/cracking of any program, especially those which you are supposed to pay for. We are not affiliated with Cerulean Studios, or any of the people that cracked their program, we are just a site providing solutions to everything and anything we can find.

Flyakiteosx messing up your computer? Here’s a possible reason why…

I used to use Flyakiteosx, and I really liked it. Before I go into this, you can read my previous post regarding flyakiteosx, or, heres a quick summary of what it does, right off flyakiteosx.com

FlyakiteOSX is a transformation pack. It will transform the look of an ordinary Windows XP+ system to resemble the look of Mac OS X. The installer simply automates the process of replacing critical system files, setting registry tweaks, and installing extras such as cursors, sounds, visual styles, etc. FlyakiteOSX DOES NOT contain any spyware or ad-ware of any kind. All files needed for FlyakiteOSX are stored in the Windows directory in a folder named ‘FlyakiteOSX’ that is hidden by default. All registry values for FlyakiteOSX are written to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\FlyakiteOSX.

What I liked about this program, is that it did everything for me, really quickly, and made everything look nice. The alternative to flyakiteosx, is going all over the web, downloading a bunch of tools. When someone puts it like this, the best choice is obvious, as it was for me. Anyway, the program was great, before it drove me to completely reset my computer all the way back to how it was when it came out of its box. Basically, at one point, flyakiteosx just stopped loading, messed up all my services, and lagged my computer. In addition to flyakiteosx not loading, I could not change the theme of my computer at all, and was forced to use the Windows Classic theme (yeah, I couldn’t even use the blue windows default theme). It probably did some other terrible  things, but I have tried to forget.

Possible Reasons Why

If this has happened to you, chances are you either installed Microsoft Office 2007, or installed MagicISO and its mounting utility, MagicDisc. I think that Office 2007 is a possibility, because, well, it all happened right after I installed it and restarted my computer. Noticing this, I tried to uninstall Office 2007, with no success. The uninstallation always failed. I could uninstall flyakiteosx, and did so, but the problem still remained. Using the computer became quite difficult. It seems that flyakiteosx alters system files for Office 2003, and I guess those interfere with what Office 2007 tries to put in place, messing things up. If you can find a way, get rid of both programs.

I also mentioned that MagicISO with MagicDisc could also end up doing this to your computer,  be sure to uninstall this, and upon your next restart, things may be back to normal. In fact, after I wiped my computer and tried to use this program (without flyakiteosx, or Office 2007), the program screwed my computer the same way it did before I wiped my computer.

So… before you go and get that recovery cd and lose all your work, try to uninstall all of these programs, reboot, and see if things go back to normal.

Hope this helps, and thanks for reading!

btw, before I did wipe my computer, I already had my external hard drives full, and ended up only being able to back up all my media by using every single 4.7 GB DVD I had in my house… :(

Itunes Plus –> DRM free!

The important stuff:

Apple launched its DRM-free music tracks from EMI’s digital catalog on its iTunes Plus site Wednesday, keeping its promise that it would offer the music files in the month of May.

The DRM-free songs, which feature high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding, are offered at $1.29 per song; iTunes will continue to offer its five million-plus songs in 128 kbps AAC encoding at 99 cents a song. Consumers can upgrade previously purchased EMI songs to iTunes Plus tracks for 30 cents a song and about $3 for an album.

Apple noted that iTunes Plus songs can be played on iPods, Mac and Windows computers, and widescreen TVs outfitted with Apple TV technology. The company said the songs can also be played on the Apple iPhone, which is scheduled to launch in late June.

This is great news for Itunes users like me who currently have to take “a long way around” to bypass DRM and play their files on other platforms. Sure its a bit more money, but I may end up buying a couple and see if its really worth it.

Turn off your computer from a cell phone.

Power [digg=http://digg.com/microsoft/Turn_off_restart_hibernate_etc_your_computer_from_your_cell_phone]I read about this online a little while ago, and found it really cool. Using this simple method, a user can shutdown, restart, hibernate, etc. his or her computer, just by sending an email from his or her phone. I know, sounds really cool. To do this, all you will need is Microsoft Outlook which should come with Microsoft Office, which most people have. This will need to be on the computer wish you wish to shutdown. So, this is how you do this:

Before I start, I would just like to note that I found where I think I read this. Original Source here

  1. First, you will need the batch files that will be needed to perform the shutdown, hibernate, etc. You can either make these yourself, or download this zip file found on the original source: Download the files here. Extract it to the C Drive so that its extension is : “C:\sms_functions\”
  2. Open up Microsoft Outlook. Make sure that you have already configured it for your email.

Google Talk + TalQer. Calling landlines with Google Talk

Google TalkThis might be old news, but I am sure that not everyone knows about this…[digg=http://digg.com/tech_news/Calling_landlines_with_google_talk]
As most of you guys should know, Google Talk is Google’s instant messaging and VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) client. With it, users can make file transfers, voice calls, get Gmail notifications, and even voice mail for people that have called them online. It can do lots of things, and for many people, it does almost everything they need it to do. However, there is that one great thing that it just does not have. This is the feature of making calls to actual landlines, a feature that Skype does have (free for US and Canada). Now, although this may soon come to Google talk made by Google’s developers, another company, Vozin Communications, has already integrated it. According to hotvoipnews.com,: Continue reading ‘Google Talk + TalQer. Calling landlines with Google Talk’

Sync your ipod with Windows Media Player

[digg=http://digg.com/apple/Synchronize_Ipod_with_Windows_Media_Player]If you own an ipod, then you know how annoying it is to try to transfer music onto your ipod from two different computers. Itunes simply does not let you. One must either try to use a .m4p conversion program (that probably doesn’t work), or they have to burn to the music to a cd, and then rip into mp3 format to be imported. However, I have found a really handy plug-in for windows media player, that simply allows you to click and drag music files, or a whole playlist. .MKV , .OGG and other files types all in Windows Media Player

[digg=http://digg.com/software/MKV_OGG_and_everything_else_all_in_Windows_Media_Player]For people that watch Anime in Japanese with English subtitles, the different file types can sometimes be a problem. Without proper software installed, Windows Media Player cannot always play the file format in which these videos are encoded to. With this setback, users usually download VLC Player, “the one player to play them all”. The media player is known for being able to play pretty much all video and sound formats. However, VLC player is not perfect. Subtitles in video can sometimes overlap and build on top of one another. When this happens, subtitles become either very hard to read, or downright impossible. I myself experienced this when watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1st GIG. To solve this problem, I just installed some codecs/software to allow me to play the .MKV (Matroska) files in Windows Media Player. So, here is what you will need to do the same:

  1. Download & Install the Combined Community Codec Pack(CCCP). You can do so here
    • Just so that you know, CCCP is “… a DirectShow filter pack specifically built for playing anime. It has been assembled by some of the most knowledgeable people in online anime distribution, and one of the primary design goals is to play as much as possible with as little as possible.” - Wikipedia
  2. Download & Install AC3Filter. Link here
    • This is necessary because many files you download may use AC3 sound. If you do not do this, then upon opening files which use AC3 in Windows Media Player, the sound will be very dim in some parts and extremely annoying.

Now you should be all set. No restart should be necessary, and you should be able to begin watching immediately. Just remember, if you are going to watch with Windows Media Player now…

  1. Right click on the video file you want to watch
  2. Select Open With.
  3. Select Windows Media Player
  4. DONT FORGET to check the box making this your selection everytimeHave fun….
